The Hatch Restore 2 has a timer built-in to its nighttime function, so that you know when it’s time to close the book, snuggle up and go to sleep if you, like me, still read in bed. I hope to use the nighttime routine more-I’m the worst at the whole “going to bed around the same time” thing, and really looking to integrate reading into my nightly wind-down. I’m eager to try evening crickets come summer, as their chirps lulled me to sleep in my childhood-something I miss in the city. The Hatch Restore 2 rose to the occasion. But in winter, you can’t exactly use a fan, which made me look for other sources of white noise. The whir of my old box fan used to put me right to sleep. I got acclimated to white noise after I started living in apartments that lacked air conditioning, and had to rely on fans all summer. The device’s white noise function can be set to run for as little as one minute and as long as 23 hours and 59 minutes (aka until the very moment you decide to restart your nighttime routine). If you only want white noise for 30 minutes or so, as you first doze off, Hatch still has you covered.

It effectively muffles everything-including occasional cat meows-and keeps me asleep all night long.

I set the Hatch Restore 2 to play Brown Noise at night at 42% volume. Sometimes he’ll meow in the wee hours before settling into his favorite spot on the couch. I love my cat to bits, but he isn’t allowed in the bedroom at night, because he scratches the carpet and wakes me. The new model now has three speakers, as opposed to the first iteration’s single speaker-and the difference is noticeable. These include: multiple types of white noise, rain, the ocean, wind and a fan, as well as more obscure tracks like “Calming Singing Bowls,” “Evening Crickets” and even a dishwasher sound. The library of noises is expansive, with 21 new sounds. The Hatch Restore 2’s white noise features are also impressive. Muffle Stray Sounds With Dozens Of White Noise Tracks For me, the out-of-the-box setting is perfect-I reliably wake up 20 minutes after it starts its gradual illumination and 10 minutes before the sound component of the alarm starts chiming. Out of the box, the sunrise alarm is set to 75%.

As with everything on the device, the intensity of the light is customizable. That said, if you find the preset brightness is too intense, or not bright enough, you can adjust it. I love that I wake up to light rather than a blaring phone alarm. Not only do I like sunrise alarms, I swear by the Hatch Restore 2. (I tested a few sunrise alarms years ago, and concluded they simply didn’t work for me.) Now, I’m transformed. What’s more, the Hatch Restore 2’s sunrise alarm reliably rouses me before the clock’s built-in alarm chimes, which is impressive considering light never woke me in the past. I entirely underestimated the difference it would make, but the light has massively improved my morning experience. It eases me from sleep into wakefulness, and makes me feel refreshed from the moment my eyes open through the rest of my day. The gentle illumination of the Hatch Restore 2 has done away with my dark and stressful mornings.
